Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef
Exhibition for The Institute For Figuring

Blue Sea Star (Linckia laevigata) on Leather Coral (Sarcophyton)
Artist Statement
I wear many hats as a creative
artist: knitwear design author, craft book producer, photographer,
yarn creator, and dimensional illustrator. When I heard about
the Crochet Coral Reef Exhibition for The Institute for Figuring,
I was inspired to create crochet designs combining many of my
artistic interests. First, I studied the hyperbolic crochet forms
from A Field Guide to Hyperbolic
Space by Margaret Wertheim. Using the techniques of crocheting
hyperbolic forms from the book, I applied the methods in the
creation of my coral reef forms.
The coral reef designs are crocheted
with Jelly Yarn®, a flexible
non-toxic vinyl yarn I developed for crochet and knitting. After
researching coral reef sea life, I created the pieces as conceptual
designs based on specific species of coral, anemone, sea sponge
and starfish indigenous to the Great Barrier Reef. Using translucent
yarn colors for the coral and anemone, allowed for brilliant color
hues. Some sea sponge and anemone forms glow from phosphorescent
elements, therefore I crocheted them from glow-in-the-dark Jelly
Yarns® to simulate the bioluminescent effect. I enjoy merging
science, geometry and the medium of crochet into conceptually
illustrative sculptures.
Kathleen's work will be featured in
the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Exibition in March.
